Golf Handicap Calculator: How to Calculate Your Handicap Index

Everything you need to know about the World Handicap System, handicap differentials, slope rating, and how to compute your net score.

What Is a Golf Handicap Index?

A golf handicap index is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other. The lower your handicap, the better you play. A scratch golfer has a handicap of 0, meaning they typically shoot around par.

The World Handicap System (WHS), introduced in 2020, unified six different handicap systems worldwide into one standard. It uses your best 8 out of your last 20 rounds to calculate your handicap index.

How to Calculate Your Golf Handicap: Step by Step

Step 1: Calculate Your Adjusted Gross Score

After each round, apply the net double bogey adjustment (formerly Equitable Stroke Control). Your maximum score on any hole is limited to net double bogey (par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole).

Step 2: Calculate Your Handicap Differential

The handicap differential formula is:

Handicap Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating)

113 is the standard slope rating. The slope rating (55-155) indicates the difficulty of the course for bogey golfers relative to scratch golfers. The course rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer.

Step 3: Average Your Best Differentials

Take the lowest 8 handicap differentials from your last 20 rounds, calculate their average, and multiply by 0.96 (96%). This is your Handicap Index.

Handicap Index = (Average of Best 8 Differentials) × 0.96

Step 4: Convert to Course Handicap

To play a specific course, convert your handicap index to a course handicap:

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

What Is a Good Golf Handicap?

Handicap ranges vary, but here's a general breakdown of what each range means:

HandicapLevelDescription
0 - 5ExcellentScratch to low single digit. You shoot near par consistently.
6 - 10Very GoodSingle digit handicap. Competitive at most club events.
11 - 18AverageMid-range player. The most common handicap range for regular golfers.
19 - 28Beginner to IntermediateStill developing consistency. Focus on short game improvements.
29 - 36BeginnerNew to golf or play infrequently. Great room for quick improvement.

Understanding Net Score in Golf

Your net score is your gross score minus your course handicap. This levels the playing field so golfers of all abilities can compete head-to-head.

Net Score = Gross Score − Course Handicap

For example, if you shoot 92 and your course handicap is 18, your net score is 74. This is how tournaments determine net winners alongside gross winners.
