This is a static fitting: the same height and wrist-to-floor chart that club makers print on their custom order forms. It does not watch you swing, so treat it as the starting point a fitter would use before putting you on a launch monitor.
The adjustment comes from wrist-to-floor when you enter it, and from height when you do not. The same adjustment is applied to every club, so the gaps between clubs stay the same. Most results land between minus one and plus one inch. Anything past two inches is rare enough that you should see a fitter in person.
| Wrist to floor | Height | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Under 29 in. | Under 5'0" | −1½ in. |
| 29 to 32 in. | 5'0" to 5'3" | −1 in. |
| 32 to 34 in. | 5'3" to 5'6" | −½ in. |
| 34 to 37 in. | 5'6" to 6'0" | Standard |
| 37 to 38 in. | 6'0" to 6'3" | +½ in. |
| 38 to 39 in. | 6'3" to 6'6" | +1 in. |
| 39 to 40 in. | 6'6" to 6'9" | +1½ in. |
| 40 in. and over | 6'9" and over | +2 in. |
Lower bound included, upper bound excluded. A 34.0 in. wrist-to-floor reading is standard.
A Worked Example
A golfer who is 6'1" would read +½ inch off the height column. His wrist-to-floor is 36 inches, which sits in the standard row. The two disagree, so the calculator goes with wrist-to-floor: he has longer arms than average for his height, and his hands already hang where a standard club wants them.
| Club | Standard (men's steel) | His length |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | 45.5" | 45.5" |
| 7 iron | 37" | 37" |
| Pitching wedge | 35.75" | 35.75" |
Change the wrist-to-floor to 38.5 inches and the same golfer gets +1 inch across the set: a 38 inch 7 iron and a 46.5 inch driver.
When to Ignore the Chart
The chart assumes an average posture. If you stand unusually upright or bend a lot from the hips, your ideal length moves and the chart cannot see it. The tell is the strike pattern: put foot spray or a dry erase mark on the face and hit ten balls. Strikes toward the heel usually mean the club is too long for how you stand; strikes on the toe point the other way.
Drivers are the other exception. A longer driver is harder to hit in the middle, and a centred strike is worth more distance than the extra inch. That is why plenty of tour players use drivers well under the 46 inch limit. If your driver misses are all over the face, choke down an inch for a range session before buying anything.
Once you change length, measure the result rather than guessing. Log fairways hit and greens in regulation for a few rounds before and after. Our club distance calculator will also show whether the new set closes the gaps you had, and the handicap calculator tells you if any of it shows up in your index.
